Senator George Akume, CON, is a prominent Nigerian politician and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), an important office within the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Appointed on 2 June 2023, Akume brings decades of experience in public service, legislative affairs and executive administration to the position. His political career spans several key roles, including Governor of Benue State, Senator representing Benue North-West Senatorial District and Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs.
As governor of Benue State from 1999 to 2007, Akume served two consecutive terms before proceeding to the National Assembly, where he represented his constituency in the Senate from 2007 to 2019. He also served as Senate Minority Leader between 2011 and 2015.
In his current capacity as SGF, Akume is responsible for coordinating government policies and programmes, facilitating inter-ministerial collaboration and supporting communication between the Presidency and federal ministries, departments and agencies.
His office plays a significant role in ensuring coordination across government institutions and facilitating the implementation of presidential directives and policy decisions.
A senior figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), Akume has remained involved in party affairs and national political engagements. His participation in high-level meetings, consultations and political gatherings reflects the intersection of governance and party coordination in Nigeria’s political landscape.
As Nigeria continues to pursue its economic, infrastructure and institutional development objectives, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation remains a key component of the federal administrative structure.
